Hi, I’m trying to locate St Barnabas (Kensington). I believe my father was baptised there in 1938. He passed away in 2001. He grew up at 5th and Dauphin. The best I could find was, there was a St Barnie’s that was torn down at 3rd and Dauphin prior to him being born. Please advise.

Thank you for your note. St. Barnabas was demolished in 1934. The property fronted Dauphin between Third and North Orianna.
      I hope this helps.
      Cheers

I believe mjk38 is in error. I served as Vicar of St. Barnabas’ Kensington, 3rd & Dauphin, from 1980-82. My immediate predecessors were the Rev. David Gracie and the Rev. Jack Shepherd. I was succeeded by the Rev. Butch Naters-Gamarra in ’82. The second floor served as sanctuary and the second floor was the Kensington-Kingstowne Child Care Center, later renamed the Mary Rouse Child Care Center after its founder, a member of St. Barnabas’. I think the last time I saw St. Barnabas’ building was in the early 2000s. I was delighted to see that much of the artwork produced by the Taller Puertorriqueno in ’81 was still very well-preserved. I remember that even the artwork close to the sidewalk was untouched by graffiti for many years, which to me shows the innate respect we all have for beautiful art.

Dear Fr. Schirmacher – thank you for your comment. My post was in reference to the church edifice, which was demolished in 1934: https://wp.me/p4cM9a-2×8. After which, as you point out, the work of the parish moved into the parish house. If you have any photographs or other ephemera during your time at St. Barnabas, I would be most happy to publish them here on the blog.
