    St. Mary’s was hugely important in supporting Philadelphia’s blossoming post-Stonewall gay community. As early as 1970, Philadelphia’s chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, which soon became the Homophile Action League, hosted the city’s first gay and lesbian dances at St. Mary’s.
